A Study in Ecocriticism Songs of the Living Earth: Rabindranath Tagore and the Ecological Imagination

By: Dr. Alka Sharma Bose

In 1928, on the seventy-first anniversary of his own birth, Rabindranath Tagore stood beside a young sapling at Shantiniketan and inaugurated the Vrik?aropa?a ceremony. It was a planting of trees that the school’s community would, from that moment, repeat every year. He would die thirteen years later, but the ceremony has been held annually since, through famine, partition, and the long unwinding of the twentieth century. The trees Tagore planted have grown old. The students who plant trees there now did not know him. The continuity is the point. The institution he founded was an argument made concrete. The human community, if it were to become a moral community, would have to learn to take its place among the more-than-human community that surrounded it.
